Adenosine 5’-diphosphate (ADP) is a nucleotide composed of adenosine and two phosphate groups. In its monopotassium salt form, one of the phosphate groups is replaced by a potassium ion. ADP is an important molecule involved in cellular energy metabolism. It serves as a precursor to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the primary energy currency of cells. ADP is converted to ATP through the addition of a phosphate group in a process called phosphorylation. This conversion allows cells to store and release energy as needed for various biological processes.
